This project has been underway now for 2 years. I’ve fiddled around with a lot of different ideas about the best way to approach it. But, over the last 3 months, things are becoming clear.
Stage 1: Turning the Physical Card Game Into a Digital Card Game
Eight years ago next month, I developed a physical card game entitled The Write Words that was designed to help even the non-writer quickly and easily generate story prompts either as an individual or by playing with a group. I’ve now got updated graphics and will soon have the money to actually invest in legally protecting that card game so that I can start promoting it in the store.
Right now, I am in the process of translating that physical card game into a card game that can be played across a network with friends or over Facebook. The coding process is hung up on a minor problem of not being able to parent the cards correctly once they are moved on screen, but I anticipate that will be resolved within the next week or so and we can move forward.
Stage 2: Creating Card Game Maker Pro
Once the digital game has been created and launched, the next stage is to create the backend that will allow players, authors, and advertisers to create their own decks and boosters which can be offered for sale in our shop. That system is actually partly completed and was started during my last update even though I didn’t at that point have the vision for where that would lead.
Everything I’ve done is starting to come together into a concrete plan for getting things out and into the hands of players while allowing for the system to be monetized so that development pays for itself and can become a full-time job of mine.
Stage 3: Linking the Website Into The Loop
The website as it stands right now is more of a developer’s log than a functioning component of the game, but this will be changing in time. Eventually, this site is going to be where those who play the game can come, complete quests put out by authors and advertisers and by in-house staff to earn cards to add to their game, sell or trade cards with one another, sell decks and boosters, enter into tournaments and play with one another.
It will feature a shop for books, for cards and card decks, for merchandise related to the game and to the books, and a space for advertisers who sell things that support writing and writers in their craft. Once this stage is complete, we are ready for the next stage.
It will also offer a shop where graphic designers and digital artists can offer pre-designed graphics for use in book covers or offer their services to card deck makers.
Stage 4: Updating the Card Game Maker Pro To Add Individual Card Graphics & Make them Customizable
Cards, as they stand right now, will be text-based. The graphics will be decorative, but individual cards will not have their own graphic image yet.
During Stage 4’s launch, we will roll out the ability for those who are building decks or boosters to make it so that individual cards can have a unique image that belongs to it and it alone as well as the ability for a card to be given a unique name in addition to their card type.
Card Deck/Booster Makers will be able to browse the selection of available art assets and purchase images to use, upload their own images, or commission images to be made for their decks.
Stage 5: Updating the Digital Card Game to Feature The New Card Types
We will update the card game to showcase what those new card types are like and allow players to get used to them.
Stage 6: Rolling Out New Quest Types
This stage will see us rolling out quests that allow players to add the new card types to their decks and to purchase the ability to customize their cards with images or names.
Stage 7: Turning the 2D Card Game Into a 3D RPG
Stage 7 will be our biggest quest: We will be working to transform the 2d card game into the 3d RPG that hangs on our original vision and goals for the project.
Stage 8: From 3D RPG to 3D AR
Once we have the 3d set up complete, our next stage is to make this an augmented reality project where people can use their phones to capture and add images, interacting with the real world and gaining or completing quests as they live their life.
